Yes Day!

Welcome friends!

Have any of you seen the movie Yes Day? It’s on Netflix, and it’s about a family—mom, dad, three kids—who decide to have a Yes Day where the kids can plan the entire day and the parents have to say yes. This is in reaction to the mom (played by the adorable Jennifer Garner, who also produced the movie), whom the kids (and the husband) say has gotten a little rigid and always says no to everything fun. Of course, I found myself defending the mom, because isn’t it true that moms have to say no to quite a lot?! It some point I started laughing though because I’ve said so many of the mom’s exact lines, word for word!

Anyway, all kinds of craziness ensues, as you might expect, when the kids plan the day. We all loved it—laughed all the way through and even cried a little bit (okay, that was me, but it was a scene where the mom rescues the oldest daughter from a music concert, then they get up on stage and sing and dance and…well, you just have to see it). We already want to watch it again. After it was over, I sent Jennifer Garner a message on Instagram (because, you know, we’re BFFs) and thanked her for producing such a thoughtful, funny, encouraging, family-friendly movie. I’m sure she’ll dm me back 😉

What I fell asleep reading last night…

My reading is all over the place these days, I’ll be honest. When I’m deep into a manuscript (and facing a deadline), I usually find myself unable to read as much as I’d like. By the time I settle down in bed at night to read, my brain is so exhausted, it just shuts off after a few pages. But I’m still trying, because reading is a love and a joy. I started Chocolat a week or so ago and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve seen the movie many, many times but never picked up the book. I love the magic in it and the fierce love Vianne has for her daughter Anouk and how Vianne helps the townspeople come alive.

A fun link or two…

Have you ever heard of a Jubilee? It’s a phenomenon where all kinds of fish, shrimp, and crabs basically beach themselves in their attempt to get oxygen-rich water. Apparently it only happens in two places in the world…a bay in Tokyo and Alabama’s own Mobile Bay. I didn’t actually grow up on the bay, but living in Mobile with many “over the bay” friends, I spent plenty of time there, yet I’ve never actually been present for a jubilee. It’s a goal of mine though. Those who live on the bay know just the right conditions to look for, and when it happens, everyone spills out of their houses in pajamas (it usually happens at night) holding flashlights and gigs and buckets, and calling all their friends. Here’s an article that explains it scientifically, and here’s an article where it’s explained Rick Bragg-style.

I know I’ve mentioned Bookbub on here before, but since I’ll be doing a giveaway JUST for my Bookbub followers as we get closer to the July 6 release of THE ONE YOU’RE WITH, I wanted to mention it again for those in the back! Chances are, if you’re reading this blog, you consider yourself a pretty serious reader, and serious readers belong on Bookbub! It’s not another social media platform—it’s a place to share book recommendations, follow authors, and find great deals on ebooks.  If you follow an author on Bookbub, you’ll get a message anytime the author recommends a particular book, and I don’t know about y’all, but I love seeing what my favorite authors are reading. I’m on Bookbub, and of course I’d love for you to follow me there, but there are also a ton of other authors there, and chances are you’ll find all your favorites there. Authors love to share book recs!

Last things…

Check my event page for new events added to the calendar for this summer–I can’t wait to see happy faces and sign books! So far, I’ll know I’ll be in Homewood, Fairhope, and Decatur, AL!

Here are a couple early reviews of THE ONE YOU’RE WITH. I can’t tell you how it makes me feel to read these words after what felt like a hard fight to get this book on the page!

“What a thought-provoking and poignant story with just the right amount of soul searching and ultimate healing. What-ifs can be devastating, but Lauren Denton handles this one with finesse. I was pulled into the story and then held on for this emotional ride. Highly recommended.” –Denise H., NetGalley reviewer

“The One You’re With by Lauren K. Denton is an excellent book that showcases the redemptive power of forgiveness. As always, Denton includes the perfect elements to keep the reader absolutely enthralled–family drama, long held secrets revealed, a deeper meaning to take to heart, and relatable characters.” –Anissa T., NetGalley reviewer
